Unplanned Pregnancy & Milk, Cheeses, and Ready to eat Meats

A pregnant woman shold follow these guidlines when eating ready to eat meats, cheese or drinking milk while pregnant:
  • Do not eat raw hotdogs or lunch meats (including deli meats, i.e. ham, urkey, salami, and bologna) unless they are reeated until steaming hot.
  • Do not drink unpasteurized milk or fods made from it.
  • Avoid soft cheeses (feta, brie, Camembert, Roquefort, blue-veined, queso blanco, queso fresco or Panela) unless the cheese is labeled as made with pasteurized milk.
  • Do not eat refrigerated meat spreads.
  • Avoid smoked refrigerated seafood.
Healthy pregnant women that eat the above foods are more likely to get ill from a bacterium called listeriousis than most other people. If a pregnant women has eaten the above foods and develops severe headache and stiff neck she should contact her health care provider.
