Pregnancy Drinking

Everything a person eats and drinks while pregnant affects the baby.  If a person drinks alcohol while pregnant it can hurt the baby's growth.  The baby may also have physical and behavioral problems that can last the rest of their life.

The children born with the most serious problems caused by alcohol have fetal alcohol syndrome.
These children may:
  • be born small
  • have problems eating or sleeping
  • have problems seeing and hearing
  • have trouble following directions and learning how to do simple things
  • have trouble paying attention and learning in school
  • need special teachers and schools
  • have trouble getting along with others and controlling their behavior
  • need medical care all of their lives
  • may never be able to work
There is not any kind of alcohol that is safe to drink while pregnant.  Problems caused by alcohol while pregnant will last a child's whole life.

If a pregnant person drank alcohol before they knew they were pregnant, stop drinking.  The pregnancy will have a better chance of going full term and the baby will more likely be born healthy.

If someone you know needs help to stop drinking call today! You can call this agency, your doctor, an alcohol treatment program, social worker, pastor, or a clinic. There are many people and agencies that want to help!
